The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a residential structure fire on this date. The fire was reported at 03:26 am by an occupant of the structure. The dwelling was occupied at the time of the fire by Richard and Robin Soistam and their family. All occupants were able to escape with no injuries reported. First arriving fire units reported fire showing from a 2nd floor deck. Firefighters from the Showell, Ocean Pines and Berlin Volunteer Fire Companies responded and quickly extinguished the fire. The dwelling involved in the fire is located at 11311 Marina Drive, Unit 47, Berlin, Maryland 21811 in Worcester County. Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately one hour. The fire originated on the 2nd floor deck and was caused by smoking. The fire is listed as accidental. The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a residential structure fire which occurred on this date. The fire was reported at 07:48 am by an occupant of the structure. The dwelling was occupied at the time of the fire and the occupant was able to escape but was transported to PRMC in Salisbury for smoke inhalation. First arriving fire units reported fire extending from a single-story residential structure. Firefighters from the Pocomoke Volunteer Fire Company responded and quickly extinguished the fire. The dwelling involved in the fire is located at 12 6th Street, Pocomoke, Maryland 21851 in Worcester County. Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately one hour. The fire originated in the kitchen and was caused by unattended cooking. The fire is listed as accidental. The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a residential structure fire which occurred this date. The fire was reported at 06:01 am by an occupant of the structure. The dwelling was occupied at the time of the fire and both occupants were able to escape with no injuries reported. First arriving fire units reported fire extending from a three-story residential structure. Firefighters from the Snow Hill, Girdletree, and Newark Volunteer Fire Companies responded and quickly extinguished the fire. The dwelling involved in the fire is located at 207 South Washington Street, Snow Hill, Maryland 21863 in Worcester County. Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately one hour. The fire originated in the living room and was caused by venting of a wood stove. The fire is listed as accidental. FMO Responds To Three Incidents on Christmas Day |

On Christmas Day, the Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office responded to (3) three incidents during the day. Two were for fire investigations involving a house located on Washington Street in Snow Hill and a second hosue fire on 6th Street in Pocomoke City, Maryland. The third call was to assist the Princess Anne Volunteer Fire Department and other Somerset County Public Safety Agencies with an explosive incident and hazardous materials identification. The Snow Hill fire was a house fire caused by a faulty woodstove/chimney. The Pocomoke fire was unattended food on the stove. More about these stories will be posted during the early part of next week. |

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a townhouse fire which occurred on this date. The fire was reported at 23:51 pm by an occupant of the structure. The dwelling was occupied at the time of the fire and all four occupants were able to escape with no injuries reported. First arriving fire units reported smoke extending from a two-story townhouse structure. Firefighters from the Pocomoke Volunteer Fire Company responded and quickly extinguished the fire. The dwelling involved in the fire is located at 400 Old Virginia Road, Pocomoke, Maryland 21851 in Worcester County. Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately one hour. The fire originated in the kitchen and was caused by a pot of grease igniting on the stove top. The fire is listed as accidental. December 23, 2009 - Sea Buoy Explosion |

The Worcester County Hazmat Team responded this morning about 1030 am to the Federal side of the Assateague Island National Seashore for a reported hazardous materials incident. The Hazmat Team was notified that a sea buoy which had washed up on the beach several weeks ago in a storm was involved in an explosion. The Hazmat Team later learned that two US Coast Guard personnel from Chincoteague Virginia's Aids to Navigation Team were on the scene and attempting to dismantle the battery powered electronics system when a violent explosion occurred. It appeared two of the four car size batteries had exploded sending chunks of battery and acid debris over a 50 foot radius from the buoy. |

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a residential structure fire which early this morning. The fire was reported at 3:08 am by a passing Worcester County Deputy Sheriff. The dwelling was occupied at the time of the fire by three occupants, all were able to escape with no injuries. First arriving fire units reported fire extending from a two-story dwelling. Firefighters from Newark, Berlin, Snow Hill and Girdletree Volunteer Fire Companies in Worcester County and Powellville Volunteer Fire Company in Wicomico County responded and quickly extinguished the fire. The dwelling involved in the fire is located at 6583 Worcester Highway, Newark, Maryland 21841 in Worcester County and is owned by Luvenia P. Spence. Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately three hours. The fire originated in the living room/dining room of the dwelling. The fire was caused by a fuel-fired space heater.
