December 25, 2009 - Snow Hill Dwelling Fire

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a residential structure fire which occurred this date.  The fire was reported at 06:01 am by an occupant of the structure.  The dwelling was occupied at the time of the fire and both occupants were able to escape with no injuries reported.  First arriving fire units reported fire extending from a three-story residential structure.  Firefighters from the Snow Hill, Girdletree, and Newark Volunteer Fire Companies responded and quickly extinguished the fire.  The dwelling involved in the fire is located at 207 South Washington Street, Snow Hill, Maryland 21863 in Worcester County.  Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately one hour.  The fire originated in the living room and was caused by venting of a wood stove.  The fire is listed as accidental.  Anyone with additional questions is asked to contact Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Matthew Owens at 410-632-5666 ext. 2 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. FMO Responds To Three Incidents on Christmas Day

On Christmas Day, the Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office responded to (3) three incidents during the day.  Two were for fire investigations involving a house located on Washington Street in Snow Hill and a second hosue fire on 6th Street in Pocomoke City, Maryland.  The third call was to assist the Princess Anne Volunteer Fire Department and other Somerset County Public Safety Agencies with an explosive incident and hazardous materials identification.

The Snow Hill fire was a house fire caused by a faulty woodstove/chimney.  The Pocomoke fire was unattended food on the stove. More about these stories will be posted during the early part of next week.

 
December 23, 2009 - Sea Buoy Explosion

The Worcester County Hazmat Team responded this morning about 1030 am to the Federal side of the Assateague Island National Seashore for a reported hazardous materials incident. The Hazmat Team was notified that a sea buoy which had washed up on the beach several weeks ago in a storm was involved in an explosion. The Hazmat Team later learned that two US Coast Guard personnel from Chincoteague Virginia's Aids to Navigation Team were on the scene and attempting to dismantle the battery powered electronics system when a violent explosion occurred. It appeared two of the four car size batteries had exploded sending chunks of battery and acid debris over a 50 foot radius from the buoy.

December 21, 2009 - Townhouse Fire in Pocomoke City

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a townhouse fire which occurred on this date.  The fire was reported at 23:51 pm by an occupant of the structure.  The dwelling was occupied at the time of the fire and all four occupants were able to escape with no injuries reported.  First arriving fire units reported smoke extending from a two-story townhouse structure.  Firefighters from the Pocomoke Volunteer Fire Company responded and quickly extinguished the fire.  The dwelling involved in the fire is located at 400 Old Virginia Road, Pocomoke, Maryland 21851 in Worcester County.  Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately one hour.  The fire originated in the kitchen and was caused by a pot of grease igniting on the stove top.  The fire is listed as accidental.  Anyone with additional questions is asked to contact Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Matthew Owens at 410-632-5666 ext. 2 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. December 21, 2009 - Accidental Dwelling Fire

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a residential structure fire which early this morning.  The fire was reported at 3:08 am by a passing Worcester County Deputy Sheriff.  The dwelling was occupied at the time of the fire by three occupants, all were able to escape with no injuries.  First arriving fire units reported fire extending from a two-story dwelling.  Firefighters from Newark, Berlin, Snow Hill and Girdletree Volunteer Fire Companies in Worcester County and Powellville Volunteer Fire Company in Wicomico County responded and quickly extinguished the fire.  The dwelling involved in the fire is located at 6583 Worcester Highway, Newark, Maryland 21841 in Worcester County and is owned by Luvenia P. Spence.  Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately three hours.  The fire originated in the living room/dining room of the dwelling.  The fire was caused by a fuel-fired space heater.  The occupants of the dwelling are being assisted by the American Red Cross.  Anyone with additional questions is asked to contact Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Matthew Owens at 410-632-5666 ext. 2 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. December 12, 2009 - West Ocean City Dwelling Fire

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a residential structure fire which occurred on December 12, 2009.  The fire was reported at 3:18 pm by the owner/occupant of the dwelling James P. and Myrna E. Elam.  First arriving fire units reported fire extending from a two-story attached garage with fire extension into the dwelling.  Firefighters from Ocean City, Berlin and Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Companies responded and quickly extinguished the fire.  No injuries were reported.  The dwelling was occupied at the time of the fire and the occupants were able to exit the dwelling.  The dwelling involved in the fire is located at 9423 Lakeview Drive, Berlin, Maryland 21811 in the Ocean Reef subdivision.  Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately three hours.  The fire originated in the attached two car garage and extended into the two-story dwelling.  The cause of the fire is listed as undetermined and the investigation is continuing.  Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Deputy Fire Marshal Robert Korb, Jr. at 410-632-5666 ext. 4 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
