Unattended cooking is by far the leading cause of cooking fires. In half of the cooking fires that began with cooking materials, including food, cooking oil, fat, grease or similar substances were first ignited.   Suggestions; Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, broiling or grilling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short time, turn off the stove.  If you are simmering, baking, roasting or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you’re cooking (NFPA Material).

On September 17, 2012, Chief Mike Sirman of the Newark Vol. Fire Co. requested this office to respond for a fire situation of suspicious circumstances. On arrival I met with Chief Sirman who advised he was contacted by the caretaker of the property in reference to a suspicious fire situation. Chief Sirman advised he entered the residence and observed a heavy concentration of soot on walls, ceilings, furnishings etc. throughout the residence but no active fire. This office conducted an origin and cause investigation in which a molten mass was located in the kitchen floor which was later identified as the remains of a residential water cooler. The Property is owned and maintained by the Williams AME Church and is located at 8536 Tindley Rd Newark, MD. A trustee on scene advised the last time someone was in the structure was sometime in July 2012. The result of the investigation indicates the fire was caused by a malfunction in the water cooler. The fire used up the oxygen located in the residence in turned causing a incomplete combustion condition sooting up the enterior of the residence before self extinguishing. The exact day and time of the fire is unknown. Anyone requesting further information should contact Deputy Fire Marshal Rodney K Sharpley Sr at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
