April 17, 2010 - Arrest Made In Pocomoke Residential Arson

The Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office has investigated a fire at 602 Mimosa Lane in Pocomoke City, Maryland.  The residence was a single family home.  The occupant arrived home in the evening of April 17, 2010 to find the fire burning.  The fire was determined to be intentionally set.  The investigation led to the arrest of 46 year old James Edward Allen of Pocomoke City, Maryland.  James Allen set a porch door mat on fire causing damage to the only doorway into and out of the house.  Mr. Allen was charged with 1st and 2nd Degree Arson and Malicious Burning of property damage less than $1,000.  Mr. Allen was held in the Worcester County Jail on $25,000 Bond.  Additionally information can be reached by contacting Fire Marshal Jeff McMahon at 410.632.5666 or  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. April 15, 2010 - Fire in West Ocean City

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a reported smoke investigation at a residential structure which occurred on April 15, 2010.  First responding firefighters from the Ocean City Fire Company reported fire showing from a mulch bed adjacent to a dwelling with extension to the siding of a two-story residential dwelling.  The 3 pm fire was quickly extinguished.  The fire was located at 12433 West Torquay Road, Ocean City, Maryland 21842 in Worcester County.  Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately one hour and no injuries were reported.  The dwelling is owned by Dennis & Connie Kominos and no one was home when the fire was discovered.  The fire originated in the front mulch bed.  The fire is listed as undetermined and the investigation is continuing.  Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Chief Deputy Matt Owens at 410-632-5666 ext. 2 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. April 11, 2010 - West Ocean City House Fire

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a residential house fire at 10359 Keyser Point Road, Ocean City, Maryland in Worcester County.  The April 11, 2010 fire was reported at approximately 11:30 pm by a neighbor. First arriving firefighters from the Ocean City Fire Company reported heavy fire showing from the rear of a single story dwelling.  The fire was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported.  The Ocean City Fire Company was assisted by the Berlin Volunteer Fire Company.  The structure involved in the fire is owned by Janet Boyer but was not occupied at the time of the fire.  The cause of the fire is listed as undetermined at this time and the investigation is continuing. April 11, 2010 - Bishopville House Fire

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a residential structure fire on April 11, 2010.  The 1 pm fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters from Bishopville, Showell, and Selbyville Volunteer Fire Companies.  First arriving fire units reported a two story residential dwelling with heavy fire showing from sides “C & D”.  The fire was located at 13202 Old Stage Road, Bishopville, Maryland 21813 in Worcester County.  Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately two hours and no injuries were reported.  The dwelling is owned by Wallace Handy and is rented by William & Merrial Custis.  The dwelling was not occupied when the fire was discovered.  The fire ignited from a faulty electrical circuit.  The Red Cross was contained to assist the occupants.  The fire is listed as accidental.  Anyone with additional questions or comments should contact Chief Deputy Matt Owens at 410-632-5666 ext. 2 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. April 8, 2010 - Commercial Structure Fire in Pocomoke

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a reported commercial structure fire at Hartley Hall Nursing Home located at 1006 Market Street, Pocomoke, Maryland.  The April 8, 2010 fire was reported at approximately 7:30 am. First arriving firefighters from the Pocomoke Volunteer Fire Company reported smoke showing from an interior mechanical room.  The smoke was contained to this area of the building.  The building was occupied at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.  The fire originated in an electric water heater located in the mechanical room and the fire was contained to this water heater.  The cause of the fire is listed as accidental. March 20, 2010 - Duplex Fire Leaves Occupants Displaced

On 3/20/2010 at approximately 6:53pm, the Pocomoke City Vol. Fire Co. was alerted for a residential structure fire located at 916 2nd St. Apartment “A” Pocomoke, MD. The first arriving unit on the scene advised smoke and fire was showing from the rear portion of side “B” of the structure. Approximately 35 Firefighters from Pocomoke VFC, and New Church VFC brought the situation under control in about one hour.  The residence was owned by Greg Duncan of Mappsville, VA.  Apartment “A” was leased by Anthony Pittman, Kristina Bivens and their two children however, no one was home at the time of the fire. Apartment “B” suffered little to no damage and the tenants, Cary Tull and Diana Mills, were permitted to return after the fire. The Worcester County Fire Marshal conducted an origin and cause fire investigation and determined the fire to be contributed to unattended cooking. March 17, 2010 - Whayleville House Fire

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a dwelling fire which occurred on March 17, 2010 at 8011 Circle Road, Whayleville, Maryland.  The fire was reported at approximately 7:31 pm by an occupant of the dwelling. First arriving firefighters from the Showell Volunteer Fire Company reported smoke showing from the rear of a two story residential dwelling. Showell Fire Company was assisted by firefighters from the Willards Volunteer Fire Company.  The fire was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported.  The dwelling involved in the fire is owned by David and Crystal Baker.  The fire was contained to the room of origin with heat and smoke damage throughout the remainder of the dwelling.  The fire originated in a first floor bathroom.  The cause of the fire is listed as undetermined and the investigation is continuing.  Anyone with any additional information is asked to contact Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Matthew Owens at 410-632-5666 x 2 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. March 19, 2010 - Berlin Dwelling Fire

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a dwelling fire which occurred on March 19, 2010 at 312 Flower Street, Berlin, Maryland.  The fire was reported at approximately 7:50 am. First arriving firefighters from the Berlin Volunteer Fire Company reported fire showing from side A and B of a two-story residential dwelling.  The fire was quickly extinguished.  The dwelling was occupied at the time of the fire and the occupant was able to escape with no reported injuries.  The fire was contained to the room of origin with heat and smoke damage throughout the remainder of the dwelling.  The fire originated in the living room located on the first floor.  The cause of the fire is listed as accidental. March 16, 2009 - County Commssioners Recognized Several County Fire, EMS and Police Personnel

Today the Worcester County Commissioners recognized, with commendations, several Worcester County Fire, EMS and Police personnel.  The commendations were awarded for a house fire which occurred on October 9, 2009 where the emergency personnel saved the life of Rodney Belmont.  Mr. Belmont was asleep in the house at the time of the fire and had been overcome by the toxic smoke.  The rescuers were able to search, find, remove and resuscitate Mr. Belmont.  He was transported to AGH in Berlin for stablization and then transfered to a Baltimore Hospital where he remained in critical condition for several months.  Mr. Belmont has made a progressive recovery and has recently returned to work.

The County Commissioners recognized ten Firefighters and EMS personnel from the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department, a Paramedic from the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Company, a Berlin Police Officer and a Worcester County Deputy Sherriff.  They will also gave station awards to Berlin, Ocean Pines, Showell and the Ocean City Volunteer Fire Compaines.
