On Saturday May 27, 2012 at approximately 1:00 AM the Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office was requested by the Worcester County Sheriff's Office to investigate a large party in a commercial occupancy in West Ocean City. The Fire Marshal's Office, Sheriff's Office and Maryland State Police investigated the occupancy at 12104 Ocean Gateway Unit 5 which was occupied by a business called Get Gnarly. Deputies and Troopers observed approximately 100 occupants inside the building being used as an assembly area with live music by a DJ and alcohol present. The Fire Marshal's office determined the property was owned by the Mariani Development Corporation and the tenant David Michael Leverton of Get Gnarly was occupying the space without a certificate of occupancy permit. Inside the space deputies found a large skateboard ramp, hot tub, permanent seating areas and a second floor sleeping area that had been constructed without any permits or inspections. The owner was advised to immediately cease and desist all operations as well as remove all constructed structures inside until a permit could be obtained and inspections performed by all county departments. It was determined by County officials the space was not zoned or authorized for assembly use in such of an occupancy. Subsequent research through several social media sources and the Get Gnarly website learned the space had been used as a host for numbers of large parties over the past year. Anyone with any additional questions or comments is asked to contact Fire Marshal Jeff McMahon or Deputy Fire Marshal Robert Korb, Jr. |
