October 20, 2011 - Hazmat in Pocomoke City

On October 20, 2011 at approximately 9 pm the Worcester County Special Hazards Response Team was requested to respond and assist the Pocomoke Volunteer Fire Company with a fuel spill in the parking lot of the Upper Deck Restaurant in Pocomoke, Maryland.  Upon arrival, a fuel spill was observed in the south parking lot covering a large area.  The vehicle responsible for the spill was not on location.  Absorbent was placed on the fuel spill which mitigated the incident.  Members of the Hazmat Team and firefighters remained on the scene for approximately 2 hours.  Anyone with additional information on the vehicle responsible for causing the spill is asked to contact Matthew Owens at 410-632-5666 or by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. October 15, 2011 - Barn Fire in Newark

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a reported commercial structure fire which occurred on October 15, 2011.  The fire was located at 7014 Cedartown Road, Snow Hill, Maryland in Worcester County.  The fire was reported at 11:36 pm by an occupant of the dwelling located on the property.  The Newark, Snow Hill and Girdletree Volunteer Fire Companies responded and quickly extinguished the fire.  The fire was contained to a large barn.  Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately one hour and no injuries were reported.  The occupant/owner of the property, Alice M. October 12, 2011 - Snow Hill Outside Fire with Burn Injuries

On October 12, 2011 the Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated an outside fire with burn injuries located at 4808 Pennywell Road, Snow Hill, Maryland in Worcester County.  Snow Hill EMS was alerted to respond to the scene for a subject with burn injuries to the hand.  The occupant of the property, Joseph G. Edwards was igniting a brush pile with the use of gasoline when the injuries occurred.  Edwards was transported to PRMC for burn injuries to his right hand and fingers.  Edwards was treated and release from PRMC.  The fire is listed as accidental and the investigation is closed.  Anyone with additional questions should contact Chief Deputy Matt Owens at 410-632-5666 ext. 2 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. October 10, 2011 - Ocean Pines Dwelling Fire with Injury

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a dwelling fire which occurred on October 10, 2011.  The fire was located at 7 Gatehouse Trail, Ocean Pines, Maryland in Worcester County.  The fire was reported at 6:43 pm by a neighbor.  The Ocean Pines, Showell, Berlin, Bishopville, and Ocean City Volunteer Fire Companies quickly responded and reported smoke and fire showing from the rear of a single family dwelling.  The fire was quickly extinguished but firefighters remained on the scene for over 3 hours conducting overhaul operations.  The occupant/owner of the dwelling, John A. Spalding, was transported to Peninsula Regional Medical  Center in Salisbury for respiratory problems by Ocean Pines EMS and was then flown by helicopter to Baltimore for further observation and treatment.  The fire originated in the rear of the dwelling, in a shop area attached to the rear of the dwelling.  The exact cause of the fire is listed as undetermined and the investigation remains open.  Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Matthew Owens at 410-632-5666 or by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. September 10, 2011 - Ocean Pines Dwelling Fire

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a dwelling fire on September 10, 2011 located at 34 Pintail Drive, Ocean Pines, Maryland in Worcester County.  The fire was reported at 10:48 am.  The Ocean Pines and Showell Volunteer Fire Companies quickly responded and reported smoke showing from a two story residential dwelling.  Upon further investigation it was determined the dryer and its contents were on fire.  The dryer was removed from the dwelling.  There was fire damage to the area surrounding the dryer and smoke damage throughout the first floor.  The occupants of the dwelling returned home and reported the fire.  No injuries were reported.  The dwelling involved in the fire is owned by Michael Stearns.  The fire is listed as accidental and the investigation is closed. 

 
October 5, 2011 - Commercial Structure Fire

The Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office investigated a commercial structure fire located at the Hardwire manufacturing facility at 1000 Quinn Avenue in Pocomoke City at 11:29 AM. First arriving units from the Pocomoke City Fire Department observed smoke showing from the roof. Upon further investigation crews located a dust collection system on fire inside the building and quickly extinguished it. Crews remained on the scene for approximately 1.5 hours performing overhaul. Damages are estimated at approximately $40,000. Anyone with any additional questions can contact Deputy Robert Korb, Jr.

 
August 27, 2011 - Pocomoke Apartment Fire

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated an apartment fire on August 27, 2011 located at 3 Wendy Court, Pocomoke, Maryland 21851 at the Wendy Garden Apartments.  The fire was reported at 8:23 pm.  The Pocomoke Volunteer Fire Company quickly responded and determined the fire in a second floor bedroom had been extinguished by an occupant of the unit prior to their arrival.  The apartment involved in the fire was occupied by LaTia Pittman and her son at the time of the fire.  All occupants escaped with no injuries reported.  The fire originated in a second floor bedroom and was caused by Juvenile Fire Play.  The investigation is closed.
