RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE FIRE IN POCOMOKE CITY

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a residential structure fire which completely destroyed a Pocomoke home this morning. The home located at 209 10th Street in Pocomoke City is owned by Dwight Campbell and was occupied by Cheryl Troast. Ms. Troast and her dog were in the home at the time of the 4:32 AM fire and both escaped safely. The Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Company responded and quickly extinguished the fire which had already consumed most of the home. An origin and cause fire investigation showed a fire started in a pan of grease on top of the kitchen stove. Further interviews determined unattended cooking ignited the fire which spread rapidly from the kitchen to the remainder of the home. Damages to the single story 1940 home are estimated at approximately $70,000. Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately two hours extinguishing the fire. The American Red Cross was summoned to assist the displaced resident. This is the third structure fire in Pocomoke City to leave all of the occupant’s homeless in just over a week. The fire is listed as accidental.
