TRAIN DERAILMENT IN NEWARK

“The Worcester County Special Hazards Response Team assisted the Worcester

County Department of Emergency Services with a train derailment in Newark early

this morning. The incident occurred around 8:30 AM at the intersection of Basket

Switch Road and Worcester Highway (Rt. 113). Eight of fifty rail cars carrying

corn derailed from the Maryland and Delaware Railroad tracks. One of those eight rail

cars crashed into a nearby residential garage killing a family dog which was located

inside. The rail cars were enroute from Frankford, Delaware to the Tyson chicken

feed mill in Snow Hill. Crane Masters from Richmond, Virginia has been contracted to

remove the damaged cars and is expected to take 3 days to complete the cleanup

process."
