FIRE LEVELS A HORSE BARN AT OCEAN DOWNS RACETRACK
“The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fire at Ocean Downs Racetrack which totally destroyed a horse barn and damaged two adjacent barns. At approximately 5:21 p.m. a fire was reported by a Security Guard working at Ocean Downs. First arriving fire units reported heavy fire showing from a one-story horse barn. Firefighters from Berlin, Ocean Pines, Newark, Ocean City, and Showell Volunteer Fire Companies responded and assisted with the extinguishing of the fire. The horse barn was a total loss and one horse perished in the fire. Two adjacent barns suffered minor damage. The fire originated in a “Tact Room” located on the northeast corner of the barn. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. One Security Guard was transported to Atlantic General Hospital by Berlin EMS with shoulder injuries. No other injuries were reported. Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately three hours.”
