Berlin Gas Explosion
“The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a gas line explosion that occurred at 9780 Main Street in Berlin. Workers from Utility Construction (subcontracted by Delmarva Power) were replacing a power pole that was leaning from Tropical Depression Ernesto when an auger struck a gas line. The explosion occurred approximately two minutes after the rupture of the gas line. The ignition source for the gas is believed to be from vehicle’s being used for the repair. Berlin and Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Company’s operated for nearly three hours with approximately 30 firefighters on location. The Ocean City Volunteer Fire Company provided standby fire coverage in Berlin while units were working on the scene."
