“Developmental Center in Newark Destroyed by Fire”
“The
Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fire at the
Worcester County Developmental Center located at 8545 Newark Rd. in
Newark, Maryland.
The facility was used to create opportunities
for individuals with developmental challenges serving, Worcester, Wicomico
and Somerset County adults.
The fire was discovered by a teacher at 3:14
p.m.
Due to an In-service training day, no clients were
present and only staff members occupied the building.
All escaped uninjured.
The
Newark Volunteer Fire Company along with Berlin, Ocean City, Showell, Snow
Hill, and Powellville (Wicomico County) volunteer fire companies battled the
blaze for 4 hours.
An excavator was utilized to raze the building
due to structure instability. The investigation thus far has revealed the
fire originated in a storage closet located in a classroom on the west side
of the structure.
The cause of the fire is still under
investigation.
The building is a complete loss.”
