"Fire and Explosion Damages the Berlin Ice Plant"
"The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating an incident at the Berlin Ice Plant. The Berlin Ice Plant is located at 305 Washington Street, Berlin, Maryland. The Berlin Vol. Fire Company received the alarm at 12:01 a.m. on September 10, 2002. The first arriving units reported smoke showing with a section of the roof lying on the ground. The fire was quickly extinguished and an Anhydrous Ammonia leak controlled. Berlin firefighters remained on the scene for approximately four hours. The explosion was caused by an Anhydrous Ammonia leak within the building which was ignited by an undetermined ignition source. The investigation into the ignition source is continuing. There were no injuries reported."
