Accidental Fire Destroys Stockton Home Leaving 6 Homeless

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a single family dwelling fire located at 1537 Snow Hill Road in Stockton, Maryland. The Stockton and Girdletree Volunteer Fire Companies were dispatched to the 5:02 PM fire and reported smoke showing from the two story home upon arrival. Crews quickly extinguished the fire which started in a second floor bedroom. Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office Deputies determined the fire to be accidental and was caused by a malfunctioning electric surge protector strip outlet. The home is owned by James and Jeanie Purnell who along with their son and 10 year old granddaughter were home at the time of the fire. Both homeowners refused medical treatment for smoke inhalation received while attempting to extinguish the fire. The Red Cross was contacted to assist the family with temporary housing. The Greenbackville, Virginia Volunteer Fire Department also assisted with extinguishment.
